NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY CELEBRATES SIX NEW RYA INSTRUCTORS
Tuesday 18th November 2025

The National Sailing Academy is thrilled to announce that six dedicated individuals have successfully completed the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) instructor certification course, as confirmed on Sunday, November 16th. These newly qualified instructors are now officially recognized as RYA Dinghy Instructors.

To qualify for this prestigious certification, candidates had to demonstrate proficiency in sailing dinghies, obtain a First Aid certificate, and complete the RYA Safe and Fun course, which emphasizes essential safeguarding practices. Additionally, they secured their Powerboat Level 2 qualification.

Each of them also had to invest significant time on volunteer hours at the NSA to gain hands on experience of teaching.

All six instructors emerged from the National Sailing Academys scholarship programs and schools initiative, showcasing their passion for sailing and their commitment to teaching future generations of sailors. The delivery of this course was made possible through funding from the Mill Reef Foundation, and special thanks also to Ondeck Antigua for its sponsorship and assistance in providing Power Boat and First Aid training.

Sylvester Thomas, Chief Instructor at the National Sailing Academy, expressed his pride, stating, “Im delighted that this group all qualified this week. Theyve worked diligently on their individual weaknesses to ensure they were well prepared for the course. They collaborated effectively as a team, and we look forward to seeing how they further develop their careers in the yachting industry.”

The successful candidates include:

  • Isaiah Tonge
  • Damarius Crump
  • Belinda Gilbert
  • Johan Salmon
  • Jahvon Hector
  • Gulliver Johnson

The National Sailing Academy extends its gratitude to RYA coaches Tim Cross and Ed Curtis for their leadership, patience, and ability to bring out the best in each individual sailor.

In further exciting news, the National Sailing Academy has successfully passed its 2025 inspection and maintains its status as an official RYA Overseas Centre for another year. This accreditation underscores the quality of teaching, safety systems, and the standard of boats available through the sailing program.
