SPONSOR A SCHOOL!
Friday 20th September 2024

With the new school term upon us we continue to grow the programme and expect upwards of 14 schools from around the island to be in attendance by mid September The programme is free to State Schools and provides 30 weeks a year of learning to sail opportunity for 15 students per school.

In order to deliver the lessons along with our free sailability programme each week day morning it means we have significant funds to raise each year in order to pay our qualified RYA Instructors, ensure both our dinghys and safety boats are up to code and of course insurance, registration fees and all the other details necessary to run the school.

We are lucky enough to have a number of funds and organizations on board supporting our schools programme and are interested in finding more partners to support the programme.

One school for 30 weeks and 15 children through the year costs the school EC$18,000.  Alternatively, one student is EC$1200 or approximately EC$40 per session.

If you or your organization are interested in becoming a sponsor of our Schools Programme, please do get in touch to discuss this further.

Our Alumni - Junella King & The Maiden Factor

Junella King, front right, with the crew of The Maiden Factor having rounded Cape Horn

Junella King started her sail training at the National Sailing Academy in 2015 and went onto become an RYA accredited instructor in 2019 and later obtaining her RYA Dayskipper certification. She is a competitive sailor and passionate about teaching people to learn to sail.

Junella was among a 12-strong crew of women aboard Maiden, a 58ft racing yacht famously sailed by Tracy Edwards and her all-female crew in the 1989–90 Whitbread round the world race.  In February, Junella became the youngest woman – and one of few people of colour – to navigate around the notoriously perilous Cape Horn during leg three of the Ocean Globe Race and on April 16th went on to become part of the first all women crew to win a round-the-world race.

Junella returned to Antigua for AYCM Women’s Race Day at Antigua Sailing Week. our General Manager and Antigua Sailing Week President, Alison Sly-Adams welcomed Junella King to the stage on AYCM Women’s Race Day. To a huge ovation, Junella accepted the award for “Inspirational Woman in Sailing”; as was presented with a Locman Italy timepiece.

She was on back on site last week as part of the ACE Summer Camp talking to the young people about her career so far and the opportunities available to them in the yachting industry.

We wish her congratulations and much luck for whatever comes next in her career.

Jules Mitchell

Jules was best known in recent years for his Spirit Campaign, where he helmed the NSA Cork 1720 boat in the sports class for many sailing weeks and consistently won his class (all but one year).

This year he became manager and skipper of Jim Vos’s Warthog and took on the responsibility of running the boat. They won their class at St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and enjoyed tight competitive racing at Antigua Sailing Week. We look forward to what comes next for Jules. He also attended the CSA Conference where he was asked to speak to the event organizers across the region about his thoughts on sailing development. His very direct and focused feedback had a huge impact on the attendees.

T’Quan James

Past student and current dinghy instructor on the Youth Prize at Antigua Sailing Week.  This award isn't about performance but about attitude.  T’Quan had been super helpful, working tirelessly day and night in the lead-up to Sailing Week to prepare his boat and crew. He showed great leadership and curiosity. We are happy to have a fantastic sailing instructor such as T’Quan on our team. Congratulations, T’Quan!

Other Students

We have other students popping up in roles at Jumby Bay, Mill Reef, Slipway & Jolly Harbour Marina all continuing to grow in their roles within the industry.
