ANTIGUA YACHT CLUB MOURNS
Friday 30th July 2010

It is with great sadness that Antigua Yacht Club writes of the recent deaths of two of its trusted and respected staff members.

On June 23, Jimmy Scott died with great dignity in Mount St. John’s Hospital after a long illness.  The funeral was held on July 9 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Falmouth with the burial taking place at the Methodist Cemetery in English Harbour.  Jimmy joined AYC in 1987 and was its longest-serving employee.  Jimmy had multiple roles at AYC over the years but he was best known as the ever-present face behind the bar.  He was more than the Club’s bartender – he was a friend and welcome company for most of us!  Our condolences and prayers are with his family and friends.

More recently, we were shocked by the sudden death of 22-year old Jamarly Meade who had been an AYC sailing instructor for the past two years.  Jamarly died very suddenly on July 17 after being sent by air ambulance to Trinidad following a diagnosis of advanced leukemia.  Jamarly was loved by everyone, especially the children who sailed with him, but also by members and staff of Antigua Yacht Club and those at Temo Sports where he was friends with most players and, in particular, Carlos, Ceri, Audrey and their dog Bobo!  In May of this year, Jamarly spent two weeks at the UK Sailing Academy in Cowes where he achieved his RYA instructor qualifications and he was very excited about passing on his knowledge to his students at AYC.  He was also hot on the heels of Karl James in terms of his sailing ability and was threatening to take the Laser Open Championship title from Karl.  Jamarly’s talents were not restricted to dinghies – he also had a great deal of experience on big boats such as Longo Mai, Rebecca and Summer Cloud.

It is rare to find a young person in today’s world with the enthusiasm and fantastic personality that Jamarly brought to everything he did.  Hans Smit said Jamarly was “a remarkable young man”, an opinion shared by all of us.  Jamarly’s funeral took place at Baxter Methodist Church in English Harbour on August 4th.  He will be sadly missed by everyone.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

The Scott/Meade family lost three of its loved-ones in the past few months and as a result is facing tremendous medical expenses.  To help with these expenses, the “Jamarly Meade Fund” has been set up at Antigua Commercial Bank and any financial assistance would be very much appreciated.  For more information click here.
