SECOND ANNUAL WEST INDIES SAIL REGATTA SLATED FOR MARCH 3RD AND 4TH Tuesday 28th February 2012
The second annual West Indies Sail Regatta will take place on the weekend of March 3rd and 4th and will once again be hosted by Antigua Yacht Club. The is a new regatta started in 2011 in which traditional wooden boats built in the West Indies get together to race while having an enjoyable and fun weekend. It provides participants with the pleasure of sailing on an authentic Caribbean-built boat.
The boats will be on the Antigua Yacht Club dock from noon on Saturday, March 3rd and there will be a bar and barbecue on the lawn from 3 pm. There will also be a short film show featuring the boats.
On Sunday racing will start at 2 pm and finish at approximately 4 pm with a prize giving and bar on the lawn.
Boats participating in this year's event include Genesis, Summer Cloud, Alexander Hamilton, Ocean Nomad, Sweetheart, Zemi and Summer Wind.
Last year eight boats took part in the regatta including five Carriacou sloops, a cutter and two schooners. The top three finishing places were all taken by Carriacou sloops with Summer Cloud finishing first, Ocean Nomad finishing second and Genesis taking third place.
All proceeds will go to Antigua's National Sailing Academy and some of the young sailors will take part in the racing.
If you don't have a traditional Caribbean boat but would like to participate, there may be some spots available so mention it to the captains at the Saturday evening event. If you're more of a landlubber, come along anyway to watch the racing and support the very worthy charity that it endorses. You're guaranteed to have a fun time.
