THE COMMODORE'S REPORT ON THE HIHO ANTIGUA FUN CUP REGATTA Friday 9th December 2011
The HIHO Fun Cup took place at The Antigua Yacht Club on the weekend of 26th/27th November. This event was sponsored by HIHO clothing of Tortola, BVI and we thank Mr. Andy Morrell of HIHO for providing the t-shirts and trophies for the regatta.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings there were classes for pairs comprising one adult and one junior. As we have several youth sailors who had no available adult to sail with, we introduced the ‘Rent-A-Brat’ scheme which encouraged some of our adult members to pair up with the juniors. There was keen competition with this class which was eventually won by Paola & Rocco Falcone with Karen Portch and Tanner Esty (the youngest competitor in the regatta at 7 years of age) in second place. Both Paola & Karen have represented Antigua at the Olympics in dinghy sailing. In third place were Andy Morrell and his son Sam.
In the single-handed classes on Saturday afternoon there were two divisions – one for the 12 years and under age group and one for the 16 and under. The younger division was a tie on points between Rocco Falcone and Sam Morrell with Rocco winning on placings. In the teens division, Hosea Williams of Antigua was the winner with Luis Fitzgerald second and Daniel Smit third.
The event was sailed in the 12 new Laser Pico’s which have been donated by a variety of sponsors to the National Sailing Academy and are available for use at the Antigua Yacht Club. An excellent dinner was enjoyed by all on Saturday evening at Cloggy’s Restaurant.
This was a friendly, fun regatta enjoyed by all and we are planning to repeat the format with a series of one day regattas during the season and HIHO Clothing is keen to repeat the two-day international event next November.
