INAUGURAL HIHO ANTIGUA FUN CUP REGATTA HELD AT AYC ON NOVEMBER 26 AND 27, 2011 Sunday 4th December 2011
Gusty and shifty wind conditions greeted racers at the inaugural 2011 HIHO Antigua Fun Cup Regatta held in Falmouth, Antigua over the weekend of November 26 and 27. Raced in new PICO dinghies, the event saw two-man teams comprising adult and junior racers battle it out over six races on the two-day regatta schedule. Junior competitors then raced singlehandedly in two divisions: 12 years old and under and 13 to 18 years old.
On Saturday Antiguan Rocco Falcone sailing with his mother Paola stepped out to an early lead in the double-handed division with finishes of 1-2-1. After lunch Rocco went on to eek out a win in the under-12 singlehanded races too. Rocco tied with BVI hotshot Sam Morrell, but won the tie-breaker. “I thought I was over early in race #2. I returned to re-start, but I didn’t have to,” explained Morrell who took a 3rd in that race.
Antiguan Hosea Williams took the older singlehanded division.
Sunday was rainy and gustier with a southeast wind. Sam Morrell sailing with his father Andy was charging with leads in almost all the races, but they always relinquished their winning position and in the end they settled in 3rd overall with Antiguan Karen Porch and Tanner Esty finishing 2nd while Team Falcone remained solidly in 1st overall.
The inaugural event saw competitors from Antigua, the BVI’s, Guadeloupe, France and New York. Superb racing was complemented by meals hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club and a great dinner at Cloggy’s restaurant. “We had two days of great racing,” said HIHO head honcho Andy Morrell. “We loved the grownup/kid format, and Antigua is a wonderful island to visit.”
