ITALIAN OPERA DIRECTOR RETURNS TO ANTIGUA Thursday 7th March 2019
Gianmaria Aliverta trained as a professional Baritone opera singer, after graduating from the International Academy of Music in Milano, Italy. Not content with specialising as a Baritone, Gianmaria went on to study as a Tenor as well, at the Donizetti Conservatory of Bergamo. Alongside Gianmaria’s talents as a singer, he undertook extra studies of opera interpretation and specific theatrical director courses at the Pedro Grassi Academy, again in Milano.
Gianmaria founded his own company Voce All’Opera in 2011 and currently directs full opera productions in many challenging locations across the world, including Europe and Japan. Specialising in concentrated modern versions of familiar classics, economically adapting to each different environment, Gianmaria’s artistry can take opera to a whole variety of unusual locations.
In May 2017, having been nominated as the International New Director of the Year, Gianmaria brought to life the dreams of Aneta and Marcel Polk, founders of the Antigua Opera Society, with a remarkable outdoor production of Puccini’s “La Boheme” in Poland.
From that moment on, their collaboration with Gianmaria has blossomed into the production of the spectacular performances we can enjoy on Antigua today.
The performances for this year are all interlinked by themes, which together create a spectrum of operatic dramatic elements. The three evenings are titled “Friendship and Devotion”, “Passion and Vendetta” and finally “True Love”. For the full opera experience, please try to attend as many of the performances as you can.
These new productions by Gianmaria can be seen at three venues: The National Sailing Academy, Clarence House and The Cove Restaurant, Blue Waters.

The Sailing Academy is an open air venue and has a large capacity. For those, particularly with family, wanting a local and exciting atmosphere on more casual lines this would be great for them. The AOS do not think that this performance is suitable for children younger than 5, but at the same time are encouraging teenagers and young adults, especially with a musical interest, to come and experience something new. To this end, The Society are sponsoring young adults up to the age of 15 to come free of charge.
The Antigua Opera Society is a registered charity offering Opera Performances on island and all profits will go to support musical and vocal education of children in Antigua and next year’s intended production. Plans for 2020 include, for the first time ever, a full Opera in March/April and discussions for this are already in motion. Their Excellencies Sir Rodney and Lady Williams are the Society’s patrons and are firmly and actively supporting the planning stage for this year’s performances.
