KIWANIS CLUB ENCOURAGES READING
Tuesday 10th April 2012

Greenbay Primary School recently received a 1000-book boost courtesy the Kiwanis Club of St John’s. The gesture marked the official launch of the club’s "Read Around the World Book Distribution Project".
The initiative was facilitated by US non-profit organisation Children’s Chance, from which the Kiwanis Club received 35,000 books.

At the Greenbay Primary School presentation Tuesday, Kiwanis President Noel Brown expressed gratitude to Children’s Chance Inc and encouraged the children to become active readers by making very good use of the books.

Also present at the Greenbay school was Parliamentary representative for the area, Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer. He emphasized the importance and benefits of reading and encouraged the students to read. He also urged the teachers to develop a programme to ensure that the students engage in serious reading at home and at school. The prime minister thanked the Kiwanis Club for choosing Greenbay Primary to be the first recipient. He said he felt a great deal of satisfaction for the positive impact the Kiwanians have been making on the society.

Principal Denise Solomon thanked the club for fulfilling a need at the school. She said the much-needed material was the first donation towards the re-opening of the school library. She assured the Club that the books would be put to good use.

As part of the “Read Around the World Book Distribution Project,” the Kiwanis Club of St John’s will be making similar presentations to various government schools and other institutions in the upcoming weeks.
