2010 INTER-SCHOOL RECYCLING COMPETITION A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
Monday 5th July 2010

The Antigua & Barbuda Waste Recycling Corporation (ABWREC) and the Environment Division Inter-school Recycling competition climaxed on Wednesday at an award ceremony held the Multipurpose Centre.  The competition had two levels and vying in both the Primary and Upper levels were a total of thirty two schools.

Victors in the primary level were The Golden Grove School in first position with 4,643lbs, seconded by the T.N. Kirnon School with 2,530lbs and coming third was the Pigott’s Primary with 1,673lbs.  In the upper level the victors were the Ottos Comprehensive School with 1,726lbs followed by the Antigua State College with 919lbsand in third position the St. Joseph’s Academy with 801lbs.

During her brief remarks, manager of the recycling facility, Mrs. Carol-Faye George stated that there were an additional twenty schools and two Pre-schools in the Recycling Programme that have proactively collected recyclable materials.  Special mention was made of the Adele School for the additional contribution towards the sorting process at the plant.  Twice weekly as part of the regular school routine for three hours on each day, Adele’s students volunteered at ABWREC under the supervision of Mrs. Jacqueline Butler and Mrs. Janelle Lake-Cottam .

Mrs. George further stated that in 2009 the inter-school competition grossed 20,000lbs or ½ a 40’ container while this year’s contest grossed 100% more bringing the total to 40,000lbs or a full 40’ container.  She then commented on the performances and rewarded several persons for their commitments and sterling contributions.  Those present at the ceremony and awarded were Pastor Oscar Cottam, Ms Rhonis Richardson, Mrs. Anna Daniel-King, Mr. George Imhoff, Mrs. Kathleen Richardson-Walter, Mr. Ronald Greenaway and Miss Lisa Roberts.

Prizes and awards were given to the recipients by the Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack and ABWREC’s Chairman, Mr. Mario Bento.  Each school were rewarded certificates of participation while awards given to the six victorious schools were certificates of accomplishment, monetary prizes of EC$1,000.00, $750.00 and $500.00 respectively for each positions in both levels along with trophies.
