ANTIGUA & BARBUDA WASTE RECYCLING CORP

Thursday afternoon Antigua & Barbuda Waste Recycling Corp, the recycling plant at Powell’s Estate played host to ten US Youth Ambassadors and their Antiguan hosts. The group of 10 young persons between the ages of 15 and 18 years with their Mentor are visiting Antigua and staying in host families.

The group funded by the US State Department arrived in Antigua on 24^th July and are leaving on August 14^th. The visit under the theme “Agro Business and Youth Entrepreneurship” has introduced the young people from Rochester, New York and Wyoming to different facets of life in Antigua.
 

According to Bob Davis, the mentor for the group from Minneapolis, “the Youth ambassador programme is an opportunity for the young people to learn about Antiguan culture and society. People may appear similar but in fact live very different lives. To experience this and learn from it helps makes us better people”.
 

In the US where the young people live recycling is part of everyday life and taken for granted but unfortunately in Antigua is only practiced by a minority of persons. Recycling is all the more important on a small island and is key to preserving the environment in which we live. The staff at ABWREC were able to demonstrate the processes involved in recycling from sorting to the grinding of bottles and compacting of cans. The group left with a greater appreciation of how we all play a part in shaping our future.
