Antigua and Barbuda has successfully secured a spot in the upcoming 2026 Central American & Caribbean (CAC) Games after an impressive showing at the CAC Games test regatta in Santo Domingo. The nation`s sailing team, competing in the highly competitive ILCA7 class, demonstrated exceptional skill and determination from August 28–31.
Leading the charge was 17-year-old sailor Shanoy Malone, whose fourth-place finish was pivotal in securing the team`s qualification. Malone`s strong performance, alongside teammate Ozani Lafond, who placed sixth, showcased their ability to compete at the highest level. The two sailors consistently delivered strong results across six races, proving their resilience amid varying wind conditions.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Antigua and Barbuda`s sailing program, which has been steadily on the rise. The team`s qualification for the 2026 CAC Games validates the nation`s development trajectory and promises a bright future for Antiguan sailing. This success is particularly sweet as it comes after the team just missed the podium in their last two regional and continental regattas.
With qualification now secured, coach Karl James MBE is set to intensify preparations for the main event in the Dominican Republic. The focus will be on further developing the sailors` mental and physical toughness, likely through increased international competition. This strategic approach aims to equip the team with the skills needed to close out major events and secure podium finishes in the final races.
The overall podium at the test regatta was dominated by regional powerhouses: Puerto Rico claimed first place, followed by the Bahamas in second, and Guatemala in third. Antigua and Barbuda`s strong performance in this company highlights the team`s potential to be a major contender at the 2026 CAC Games.
Overall podium:
1st Puerto Rico
