ANTIGUA SAILORS SHINE AT MAYAN WIND FEST REGATTA IN CANCúN

Three talented sailors Shanoy Malone, Ozani Lafond, and Emily Gaillard from Antigua recently made waves at the prestigious Mayan Wind Fest Regatta held from January 16th to 19th in Cancún, Mexico. The event served as a crucial qualifier for the upcoming Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay, with only three coveted spots for aspiring athletes.

Representing Antigua with pride, the two male sailors showcased their skills in the ILCA7 class, a competitive sailing category that demands precision, strategy, and resilience. Among the participants, Shanoy Malone of Antigua's sailors delivered an outstanding performance, the two male sailors proudly represented Antigua, showcasing 2nd overall, while Ozani Lafond secured a commendable 4th place.

In the female ranking of the ILCA 6 class, Emily Gaillard finished 13th. The podium places are 1st Mateo Maldonado - Argentina 7 points, 2nd Shanoy Malone - Antigua 18 points, and 3rd Santa Medina - Mexico 22 points.

The regatta attracted young sailors from across North, South, and Caribbean America, all vying for the opportunity to compete on a larger stage in Paraguay. With challenging winds and dynamic sailing conditions, the event tested each participant's ability to adapt and excel under pressure. The second-place finisher Shanoy Malone displayed remarkable skill and determination throughout the competition, consistently demonstrating tactical excellence and speed on the water.

With his lowest position being 5th place in the first race, Shanoy had top 3 finishes in the other 7 races. This achievement not only highlights their commitment to the sport but also brings significant recognition to Antigua's sailing community.

The fourth-place Ozani Lafond also made a strong impression, showcasing impressive talent and potential for future competitions. Both athletes have garnered attention for their dedication and hard work, inspiring the next generation of young sailors in Antigua. Coach Karl James MBE, along with their supporters, celebrate the sailors' achievements, emphasizing the importance of such events in nurturing young talent and promoting sailing in Antigua.

The success at the Mayan Wind Fest is seen as a stepping stone toward greater achievements at the Junior Pan American Games and beyond.
As the sailors return to Antigua, they carry with them valuable experience and a renewed determination to continue their pursuit of excellence in the sport. Their remarkable performances have not only advanced their individual goals but also shone a spotlight on Antigua's burgeoning sailing program.

With the 2025 Junior Pan American Games on the horizon, the sailing community in Antigua is eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for these exceptional athletes. As they prepare for future competitions, the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship remains a driving force, uniting sailors across the region in their shared passion for the sea.
