OLYMPIC DAY MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF STATE, SPORTS SENATOR, HONOURABLE WINSTON WILLIAMS JR.
Wednesday 23rd June 2010

Today marks the 106th anniversary of the founding of the Olympic Movement which was formalized through the establishment of the International Olympic Committee on today’s date in 1894 in Paris, France. The IOC, through its various national Olympic committees continues to carry out its mandate to place sport at the service of humanity, by harnessing its great potential to the global struggle for peace, prosperity and the preservation of human dignity. All peoples across the globe have now come to accept the tradition of a four year cycle of events which unveils a wealth of talent and camaraderie through either the Winter or Summer Olympics.

This year for the first time, the Olympic Movement will engage sporting youths of the world in the first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. This new four year cycle will be joined by another, the Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012. The movement has distinguished itself and demonstrated its sustainable principles by its growth across the world. Such an achievement is worthwhile celebrating. I extend commendation to the Olympic Movement through the Executive and Members of our own local Olympic Chapter, the Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Association for the work done to date and the commitments made for the future.

As a result of this sustainable growth, the International Olympic Committee has been able to share the fruits of its labours with member countries like our own through a number of initiatives, most notably the Olympic Solidarity Programme. I would wish to express appreciation on behalf of all beneficiaries including administrators, athletes, coaches and officials to the local Committee for facilitating the development of sports through capacity building and professional development. The Ministry of Sports welcomes the significant part played by all active sports and recreational entities including the Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Association (ABNOA) in sharing the burden of national development through sports. We are pleased that this year 2010, the Department of Sports was particularly singled out to receive the equivalent of EC$100,000.00 in training support. There are also other significant contributions which have been made by National Sports Associations, many of which are managed solely by volunteer members. However, there is still much to be done. Let us be inspired by the three pillars of the Olympic Day, Move, Learn and Discover and together make a difference through sport.

Today, the Ministry of Sports also joins the ABNOA in congratulating all those who have served their country through sports, particularly through their participation in the Summer Olympic Games since 1976 to 2008 with the exception of 1980 when our country took the position to boycott the Games in Moscow. We believe that our over sixty Olympic Athletes who have participated in eight (8) Olympic Games to date, have blazed the trail for a new breed of Antiguan and Barbudan athletes. We are confident that the foundation which has been laid by our sporting stars at the Olympic level will be built upon to the extent that we will soon and very soon celebrate our first Olympic Gold. We wait in anticipation for the upcoming Games!
Once again, a Happy, Sport filled Olympic Day is wished to all from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda

Let us celebrate the achievements of the Olympians of Antigua & Barbuda.
