2013 NATIONAL ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS A SUCCESS Wednesday 5th June 2013
Commenting on the 2013 National Athletic Championships which was held at YASCO on Sunday June 2nd, 2013, President of the A.B.A.A. Dr. Rodney Williams said that many of the events were very keenly contested and a high standard was achieved in the Sport at the local level. The National Championship saw the participation of a number of impressive local, regional and international athletes being supported by a large number of spectators gathered at the track until late into the evening.
Dr. Williams said he was particularly impressed with the performance of Miguel Francis and Samantha Edwards. Miguel Francis completed the Men’s 200 metre race in his personal best of 20.6 seconds and created a new record for the Track and Field Championships and the National Juniors as well. Samantha Edwards produced the fastest 400M Women’s finish in 52.67 seconds in any of the national championships to date.
The President stated that the A.B.A.A. will continue to work feverishly to develop the sport of Track and Field in Antigua and Barbuda by increasing the number of officials in the Sport, the number of field events and expanding the talent identification process so that more athletes and compete and perform at the highest levels.
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Dr. Williams in his address said that Antigua and Barbuda is expecting to compete in some six(6) Regional and International meets during the present Athletic Season which runs up to September,2013. The President also congratulated Antiguan and Barbudan runner, Ms. Afia Charles who broke the Women’s 400M record while competing in her College Championship in the U.S. by clocking 52.49 seconds, surpassing the 52.8seconds previously achieved by Jos Joseph some 20 years ago. Afia now holds Antigua and Barbuda National Women’s 400 metre race. The President also applauded the efforts of Antiguan and Barbudan athletes who recently won three (3) Gold and a Bronze medals at the Hampton Games held in Trinidad and Tobago 25th and 26th May this year.
The 2013 National Track and Field Championships was the third consecutive edition of the event under the present ABAA Leadership.
