AHTA SPONSORS NEW ROAD SIGNAGE
Friday 4th July 2014

The Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association (AHTA) Tourism Development Fund, in collaboration with the Antigua & Barbuda Road Safety Group and SignCom, unveiled several new directional roads signs during the first phase of a project to replace damaged and faded signs.

The signs erected on Marble Hill Road and in the Weatherill’s area, are just the first in a joint effort to improve road safety by erecting signs throughout Antigua over the next year. The project has launched in the Northwest corner of the island and will gradually expand to other areas.

“Clear signage is important for the safety of all road users. Many of our current signs are faded or missing all together. This on-going programme seeks to replace those signs, making our roads safer,” AHTA General Manager Neil Forrester said.

He also noted that, “Lack of adequate signage has long been a complaint of local residents but also of tourists visiting Antigua. These signs will make our visitors feel more comfortable as they traverse the island. And the more comfortable they are, the more they will explore our nation. Simply upgrading the nation’s signage will positively impact our tourism product.”

President of the Road Safety Group Alice Ho-Tack added, “Road Safety Management is Pillar 1 of the United Nations decade of action for road safety, and signage is a major part of road management. We truly hope to have the project completed within a year”

This project is funded through the AHTA’s Tourism Development Fund / Dollar-a-Day programme. A “dollar-a-day” is added to hotel guest’s account for each day spent at participating properties. This voluntary contribution is utilised to improve our tourism product, keep the beaches safe and clean, improving our historical sites and improving the overall visitor experience.
