EAG is gearing up to take eco-tourism to the next level! This May, we launched a Tour Guide Training Workshop led by our consultant, Christopher Waters.
The workshop brought together staff, partners, and volunteers to strengthen their skills in sustainable tourism. This initiative was designed to build capacity within the organization, as the EAG prepares to offer our signature eco-tourism experiences. These include: Redonda Ecosystem Reserve and Offshore Islands AdvenTour experiences, sea turtle tours and birding tours.
Our aim is to enhance visitor experiences and ease the demand on current staff, while ensuring that our eco-tours continue to grow sustainably!
Celebrating Endangered Species Day!
It came back for the third time! Exam Energizer with the EAG kicked off our Endangered Species Day celebrations once again. This year, over 90 Grade 6 students from Sunnyside Tutorial, Bendals Primary, Grays Crescent Primary, and Foundation Mixed Primary joined us for an engaging day of learning, covering key Environmental Science curriculum topics. The highlight of the day was a surprise visit from the Antiguan Racer Snake—a living symbol of our nation’s conservation success.
The event, led by Science Communications Officer Sherrel, was made possible through the generous support of Community First Co-operative Credit Union and the UWI Five Islands Campus. We are proud to continue this tradition of empowering young learners through environmental education and supporting students in their National Assessments!
Redonda at the Caribbean Travel Forum!
The Caribbean Tourism Travel Forum was a hit for the Redonda Ecosystem Reserve! As part of the 43rd CHTA Caribbean Travel Marketplace, this forum, under the theme “Sustainable Tourism in the Caribbean: Charting a Resilient Future,” brought together regional leaders to discuss climate resilience, conservation, and sustainable development.
Johnella, delivered a passionate presentation on Redonda’s transformation—from a barren, rat-infested island to a thriving ecosystem—demonstrating how community-based conservation can drive both environmental and economic resilience. Her presentation highlighted the tangible results of prioritizing nature and people in conservation, showcasing Redonda as a model for the wider Caribbean!
EAG participates in Responsible Tourism Day!
We didn’t just attend the forum! On May 18th, the EAG took part in Responsible Tourism Day, the launch of the Caribbean Travel Marketplace. We took delegates to explore the mangroves of Codrington Island before visiting Great Bird Island, where they learned about the work of the Offshore Islands Conservation Programme and got up close with the Antiguan Racer.
Thank you to the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association for the opportunity to showcase our work!
Partnership in Motion: Sea Turtle Training with Carlisle Bay Hotel!
As part of our ongoing partnership to promote sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship with Carlisle Bay Hotel. Miquel led an interactive session that engaged staff in learning all about Antigua and Barbuda’s nesting sea turtle species!
The training is part of a broader initiative with Carlisle Bay to expand staff capacity through environmental education, community engagement, and eco-tourism tours. This collaboration not only strengthens the hotel’s sustainability efforts, but also advances EAG’s mission to foster collective responsibility for biodiversity and ecosystem conservation!
JUNE 2025
Our Team Travelled to Anguilla!
From 24–26th June, our team travelled to Anguilla to participate in a Caribbean Conservation Capacity-Building Exchange, in partnership with Re:wild, the Anguilla National Trust, and Wildlife Management International Ltd.
We explored ecosystems and offshore islands, while gaining practical experience in areas such as creating and managing “mainland islands,” invasive species eradication, biosecurity, species monitoring, translocation, habitat creation, and community engagement in conservation.
We extend our gratitude to the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund for this amazing opportunity!
Birds & Lizards Training with Carlisle Bay Hotel!
Bird and lizard knowledge isn’t just for us at the EAG—it’s for everyone! In June, we were thrilled to continue our partnership with Carlisle Bay Hotel by hosting a Birds & Lizards Training for their staff. Led by our team member Shanna, the interactive session helped staff increase their capacity to identify Antigua and Barbuda’s landbirds, seabirds, shorebirds, and lizards, as well as develop skills in using binoculars, collecting data, and interpreting environmental information.
A special thanks to our Partnership Development Coordinator, Adia, whose dedication keeps this partnership running smoothly. We look forward to building on our collaboration and advancing our shared commitment to sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation!
JULY 2025
Level Up! Life Skills & Career Workshop!
We made environmental education fun! On 16th July, we had the pleasure of participating in the Level Up! Life Skills & Career Workshop for Teens, hosted by Community First Co-operative Credit Union. During our session, we showcased all our programmes at the EAG and gave participants a taste of what we do- testing their environmental knowledge through interactive puzzles and Menti quizzes. It was a fantastic time with the students, who were curious, engaged, and eager to learn. Even members of CFCCU team joined in on the exercises!
A big thank you to Community First for inviting us to be part of this inspiring event and for providing a platform to engage young people in practical, fun, and meaningful way.
Antiguan Racer Stakeholder AdvenTour!
From the office to the outdoors! In early July, we had the pleasure of taking key personnel from the Ministries of Tourism, Lands, and Environment on an Antiguan Racer Stakeholder AdvenTour to Great Bird Island. This tour provided an opportunity to showcase our ongoing conservation efforts for the endangered Antiguan Racer and explore how these initiatives can contribute to Antigua and Barbuda’s eco-tourism offerings.
The tour allowed for meaningful exchanges with government stakeholders, and we look forward to continuing collaborations to advance sustainable tourism and species conservation in Antigua and Barbuda!
Redonda Raffle Returns!
We were thrilled to bring back our Redonda Raffle this year! On 31st July, three lucky Antiguans and Barbudans won a free helicopter trip and guided EAG tour of Redonda.
A special thank you goes to everyone who entered the raffle and to the Wyss Foundation for making this experience possible. This raffle gives locals a meaningful way to connect with Redonda and engage directly in conservation efforts!
We look forward to taking our winners to Redonda very soon!
AUGUST 2025
The Launch of a New Initiative!
We are excited to announce the launch of our newest pilot initiative: the Offshore Islands Guardian Programme!
This programme transforms our wildlife monitoring efforts into a structured short course, providing volunteers with formal certification in conservation and environmental stewardship. Participants will engage in both theory and practical sessions and earn rewards as they progress through the programme. This hands-on approach supports skill development while giving volunteers a meaningful role in safeguarding Antigua, Barbuda, and Redonda’s unique wildlife.
We are excited to see our volunteers grow through this programme and look forward to sharing more once it concludes!
We Have a New Executive Director!
The Environmental Awareness Group is delighted to welcome Dr. Mareba M. Scott as our new Executive Director!
Dr. Scott brings a wealth of experience in Caribbean environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and programme management. She will lead the EAG in advancing its mission to raise awareness of the value of Antigua, Barbuda, and Redonda. She will also promote sustainable use of natural resources, and support conservation projects that benefit people, wildlife, and our ecosystems.
As Executive Director, Dr. Scott will oversee strategic management, human resources, fundraising, partnerships and donor relations, operations and financial management, and technical programme delivery.
We are excited to begin this new chapter under her leadership. Stay tuned for the full press release!
