STAYCATION TRIAL
Thursday 21st June 2012
The concept of a staycation on an island the size of Antigua, I will be honest, was something I thought about, and then dismissed. Isn’t half the point of getting away, not just getting away from home, but getting away from all the familiar faces? Certainly that was what I was pondering in the very few moments I had any time to think about anything other than how tired I was during the last two months of the season.

At the Sport Fishing Launch Party just after Antigua Sailing Week however, my immediate reaction on being the recipient of a weekends stay at Buccaneer Beach Club, was to do a little dance as my husband Colin claimed our prize from Chairman Phillip Shoul. We ignored the shouts of ‘fix’ and decided we deserved this. And so three weeks ago, it was without any trepidation whatsoever we took the long drive north. None of the usual stress of passport, tickets and overstuffed suitcases for us – we slung our stuff into a bag, didn’t worry about the amount and threw it all in the car.

As Buccaneer Beach Club is actually a number of apartments and two cottages with fully loaded kitchens, our first stop was to stock up the fridge. The hit list of shopping involved food and drink normally considered illegal for day to day consumption, and once bought, we arrived at our apartment at 1pm (2 hours before check in, without warning we add, we were that ready for a holiday) and taken straight to our apartment.

Now at this point I should tell you, rather than belabor it throughout, that from the moment we entered the property until we left, every single one of the staff were incredible, friendly, smiley, made eye contact, couldn’t do enough to help us!

If you haven’t visited the club, you are in for a really nice surprise. It is immaculately kept, from the spotless buildings and walkways, to the manicured lawns, the trailing plants, the cleanliness of the swimming pool, the perfectly situated standpipe to wash off sandy feet as you leave the beach, clearly every detail has been thought through really well. That said if you know the owners, it comes as no surprise that standards are high and adhered to!

Our room was on the first floor, which was perfect, as I was still harbouring a fear that everyone I knew in Antigua would walk past my verandah. The rooms inside are as immaculate as the outside. The property is three years old but you wouldn’t know it. A large bathroom with very large shower, A/C in the bedroom and in the lounge, which with shutters closed dealt quickly with the oppressive heat of the day, made for an immediately homey and comfortable feel.

We did however decide that proper food was needed so we set off to the beach (less than a minute to the gate and through it to claim what was to become our ‘spot’ under the palm trees beachside).  Once chairs were inhabited and the full horror of the hot sun set in, we retreated quickly to Coconut Grove for a Caribbean burger and club sandwich – perfect lunch time holiday food. A few cold beers and we were back at the loungers.

What followed was a 50 hour whirlwind of sleeping, eating, lying on the beach, cooling off in the ocean , eating…you get the picture! An in room massage for ninety minutes on Saturday morning only added to the bliss.

It’s easy to forget when you live ‘over the other side’ just how many great places there are to eat and relax. We sampled Table d’hote, Cafe Bambula (try the moist chocolate cake and take the  ‘eat it without saying  mmmmmmmmmmm challenge’), C&C Wine Bar, Coconut Grove, Tradewinds and Pepperz n’ Lime. Of course there were many places still left untouched so that is all for next time.

Despite plans to the contrary on Sunday we just couldn’t tear ourselves away from our ‘spot’. Check out our spot – the big red one!  Would you want to move? We finally had to – we packed our bags and  said goodbye to the room. I only just remembered my laptop which made the journey as a kind of security blanket I guess, just in case. But stayed firmly in the linen closet for the entire weekend.

So would I do it again? Absolutely? Did I relax in Antigua? Absolutely, and more than that, people we met and knew along the way were completely respecting of our vacation time, and we didn’t get into ‘work talk’.

The team at Buccanner were an absolute delight and I would and have already in fact, recommend anyone to go, or send family or friends to stay at Buccaneer Beach Club. The fact that it is so close to the beach but also in walking distance to so many bars and restaurants is perfect. You really don’t have to leave it if you don’t want to!
