ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA YACHT WORKERS ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS ATTACK ON MEMBER Wednesday 14th March 2012
14 March 14, 2012, English Harbour –St. Paul’s: The Antigua & Barbuda Yacht Workers Association condemned in the strongest terms the attack and injury of one of its members, Wednesday Morning, (14 March 2012) by unscrupulous individual hustling during the season.
The member of the ABYWA, Edward Jackson received several lacerations on his hand after he was offered employment by a skipper, who reportedly fired the attacker in question after he produced below par work.
After the member began working it was alleged that the non –member returned to the dock and accused the legitimate member of taking his livelihood.
The Antigua And Barbuda Yacht Workers Association (ABYWA) wishes to inform the yachting community that it is a registered body and represents approximately 150 members. All registered members, since the 2009/ 2010 have been issued with an identification card of the ABYWA and could be recognized by the display of such badge as a form of security and accountability.
The A.B.Y.W.A. operates with an objective to promote and maintain the desired standards for work performed by its members and to take appropriate measures to ensure that quality of work is delivered by its members at all times.
It also provide opportunities for continued training of members and sharing of experiences to build capacity and promote and enforce a code of conduct for the work place that must be followed by its members.
“We are also working with the Marinas and the Antigua and Barbuda Marine Association (ABMA) to ensure that work provided to yachts is done by professional varnishers, painters and other craftsmen with the necessary expertise, “ said Stephen Samuel President of the Antigua & Barbuda Yacht Workers Association.
But, while the association continue to grapple with the issue of security, particularly that of illegal workers, the body is calling for security officers and monitoring bodies to be vigilant and enforce the measures in place to stave off any future attack on its members, and bring to a minimal the problem which has the potential of impacting the industry and the livelihood of its members.
