Sickle cell disease is an inherited, potentially incapacitating, blood disorder.  It is   prevalent not only in the Caribbean and the African-American region, but also in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India.  Patients with sickle cell disease go through episodes of excruciating pain due to blockage of small blood vessels.  Long-term complications can affect any organ, ranging from visual impairment to kidney damage or stroke.  Early diagnosis and proper care can prevent suffering and handicap.  Even though complications cannot always be avoided, most sickle cell patients receiving adequate medical care can live a full life.

The Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association (ABSCA) has been working diligently in order to establish a sickle cell clinic in Antigua – a centre where they can deliver competent and prompt treatment of painful crises, educate patients concerning the day-to-day management of their condition, offer regular follow-up visits and genetic counseling and provide information for the public.  The centre is open, but still in need of a long list of necessities.

ABSCA, in conjunction with Art at the Ridge, is hosting a fundraising art exhibition featuring new paintings by Nicholas Hadeed.  The entire proceeds of the first three paintings sold (one large, two small) will be donated to the Sickle Cell Association.  In addition, 15% of each further sale will go to the association.  The event will take place during the Sickle Cell Association’s Awareness Week in June, at Sugar Club, with a preview evening on Friday 20 June 2014, 5.00pm to 8.00pm, and a continuing exhibition on Saturday 21 June 2014, 9.00am to 5.00pm, and Sunday 22 June 2014, 11.00am to 3.00pm

Please help us to improve the lives of sickle cell patients in Antigua and Barbuda by supporting this event.
