Anyone tuned in to the buzz around the pre-Carnival fetes or witnessing the writhing masses intoxicated on the music of the season could be forgiven for asking, “what economic downturn?”
You know the saying the show must go on?
Well, in Antigua and Barbuda, there is no bigger show than Carnival; and between all the new dan-dan, the fete tickets, the liquor, the food, the down payments on mas costumes – in spite of skyrocketing prices – Carnival is its own stimulus, in more ways than one, a boost to flagging spirits during this long hot summer. So, as Calypso legend, winner of more crowns than any other local practitioner of the craft, Short Shirt, sang on his classic ‘Summer Festival’ back in 1980, “accept the invitation, for your participation, I’m sure you won’t want to go home.”
