Article from Sara Eldridge
Three of our Antigua Optimist sailors, Shanoy Malone, Maurice Belgrave, Maria Eldridge, along with Sue Agusti from Colombia and their coach Karl James, just returned from St. Maarten where they spent the weekend sailing at the 12th Annual “Sol” St Maarten Opitimist Championship.
Twenty-nine young sailors ages 7-15 representing 6 countries took part in this International event: 6 competitors from St Maarten, 8 from St Barths, 6 from Curacao, 5 from Anguilla, 3 from Antigua and 1 from Colombia. Sailors were divided into two classes, Blue and Orange, with Blue class being the most advanced. Eleven races were completed over the two days with two discards. Shanoy Malone took home Second place in Orange Class and Maurice Belgrave took home Sixth place with a first in the last race! Maria Eldridge took Forth place in Blue Class with one point difference from third place and finishing the last race with a first!
Well done Team Antigua and many thanks to coach Karl James for his positivity and encouragement. Also thank you to Janet Robertson and the St Maarten Yacht Club crew for putting such an amazing event into place. We will certainly be back next year to WIN!
