ANTIGUAN YOUTH WORLDS QUALIFICATION SETTLED AT EMERGING NATIONS PROGRAM
Tuesday 29th December 2015

Read about Jules Mitchell and Rhone Kirby’s battle for a spot at the ISAF Youth Worlds. Jules is currently in Malaysia, and Rhone, although not going to Malaysia, is at the Orange Bowl Regatta taking place from 26th December to December 30th.

We wish both of them the best of luck in their respective events – we will be following the races carefully.

18 December 2015 - Rhone Kirby and Jules Mitchell are two proud Antiguans, good friends and two of the best young sailors from the Caribbean island.

The pair were part of the Americas Youth Worlds Emerging Nations Program clinic which took place in their country and whilst the aim of the clinic was to develop young talent, the stakes and competition in the mini regatta were high.

Whoever came out on top of the two day mini regatta would determine who would attend the Youth Sailing World Championships and it went down to the wire.

World Sailing TV were there to meet the young sailors, find out about their background and to see who took the Youth Worlds Laser Radial spot for Antigua.

Watch the video "Day in the life of Antiguans" here.

Snapshots - what they said:

Rhone Kirby, "I'm from Antigua and I live just right in front of the water-front so as I saw the boats go out when I was a kid I just said I should start doing that sport and I went down to the yacht club one day and just took up a boat and just went sailing and I capsized and the instructors came and said if you want to learn how to sail you've got to take it back to the club and then I was like 'I can't do that, so can you teach me?' and then after that point I just got attracted to the sport and I just continued until I got this far."

Jules Mitchell, "My first big fleet regatta was in Orange Bowl 2013 with a 129 boats on the start line. The first start I missed the sequence and I was the last boat off the line. The Youth Worlds is going to be intense, got to work really hard. My hopes and dreams is to go to the Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo representing Antigua in the Laser Standard class."
