MANY FACES OF YACHTING IN ANTIGUA
Thursday 29th January 2015

The Many Faces of Yachting in Antigua series continues as we highlight Vanroy ‘Festus’ Isaac, the Manager of Jolly Harbour Marina. Festus grew up in Swetes Village, worked as a ship’s carpenter, went sailing at 20 years old as crew on an 82-foot wooden Fife for two seasons, then moved to St. Maarten and worked as a charter boat company manager for 10 years.

What is your role in the yachting community in Antigua?
I am the Marina Manager for Jolly Harbour Marina.

How long have you been in that role?
Twelve years.

Is this your first role in the yachting industry? If not, what previous roles have you had?
No, I have worked as crew on charter boats, managed a charter boat company, and managed a leading Caribbean chandlery.

What interested you in the yachting industry originally?
The interest came when the opportunity arose for me to work on a sail boat, get paid and see the world.

What is one of your most memorable moments during your time in this field?
Delivering a yacht to and entering New York City.

What is the highlight of the yachting year for you?
The yearly racing circuit in the Caribbean.

Does yachting form part of your leisure activities?
Yes, very much so.  I am a cruiser and have my own boat.

What do you think can be added or worked on to improve the yachting environment in Antigua?
The Government needs to become sensitive to the yachting industry and realize the economic benefits that can be derived from the yachting industry in general.

What is your advice to someone wanting to start in the yachting field in Antigua?
I advise potential boaters to seek knowledge and expand upon it to reap the numerous benefits and endless rewards from the yachting field.

We would like to thank Festus for taking part in the first edition of our Many Faces of Yachting in Antigua series.  If you know of someone working in the yachting industry who you would like to read about in Antigua’s Yachting Insider, please let us know by emailing stephanie@antiguanice.com.
