ANTIGUAN YOUTH SAILORS AT THE OPTIMIST SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Wednesday 23rd April 2014
Two of Antigua's youth sailors returned from the Optimist South American Championships with big smiles. Louis Bavay and Rocco Falcone participated in the regatta which held from April 10 to 20 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. It was a wonderful experience competing against 158 sailors for 16 different countries.
Winds were very light with the current changing all the time, something which doesn't play a big part in Caribbean sailing.
On the first day of racing Rocco was the first boat to the weather mark and reaching and managed a fantastic 6th place finish!! After five races, they divided the fleet into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets.
Rocco was in 19th place in Gold fleet but dropped to 34th and on final day which didn't go too well for him. Overall he finished 50th which is an excellent result. Rocco's best race was a 2nd place place finish and he was the second-best Caribbean boat - amazing results!
Louis also had great success, finishing 27th in Silver fleet with his best race seeing a 7th place finish. Louis was the 4th best Caribbean boat.
They were the boys from Antigua and everybody seemed to know them. They were speaking Spanish, a few words of Brazilian . . . and they were always smiling.’
Congratulations to our Antigua boys for their continued success and for making us all proud!
