TALISKER WHISKY ATLANTIC CHALLENGE TO FINISH IN ANTIGUA
Thursday 9th January 2014

(Nelson’s Dockyard - St. Paul’s ANTIGUA) Once again, the renowned Nelson’s Dockyard will become the focal point of yet another prestigious International marine event. As international media attention descends into Antigua, ‘The Yachting Capital of the Caribbean’, the National Parks Authority (NPA) and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) prepare to welcome the participants of the world’s number one ocean endurance race, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Titled as the ‘World’s Toughest Rowing Race’, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge has 13 row boats crossing the treacherous Atlantic Ocean on a course for Antigua, having set off from San Sebastian in La Gomera, which is one of the Canary Islands, over a month ago.

The over 3000 nautical mile journey across the world’s second-largest ocean is anticipated to bring yet another opportunity for considerable marketing opportunities for Antigua and Barbuda.

A few of the hotels in the Dockyard area have already reported increased bookings. “It is events such as these that continue to draw international media attention to our shores and affirm Antigua & Barbuda’s position as a leading world-class destination for sailing and marine activities, and we see the direct benefits being made to the island,” noted ABTA Marketing Manager, Mrs. Charmaine Spencer.

Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation, the Hon. John Maginley added, “The destination of Antigua and Barbuda is so pleased to welcome the participants of the Talisker Whisky Challenge. An event like this is always welcome as it gives us an opportunity to showcase our excellent yachting and marine facilities as well as our warm hospitality.”

The National Parks Authority, in collaboration with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, is organizing a welcome reception for the first boat when it arrives sometime between Monday and Wednesday next week.

This is not the first time that Antigua has been the final destination of an Atlantic crossing and each time, the publicity generated from the dangerous trek across the ocean has provided a boost for the ongoing efforts to increase the islands’ attractiveness as a tourist destination.
This is, however, the first time that Antigua and Barbuda will host the finish of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, and it will do so again in 2015.

“We have proven ourselves as wonderful hosts here in the Nelson’s Dockyard time and time again. So recognizing the benefits that can come our way as a marina and tourist destination, we are looking forward to treating our guests after a tiring journey,” stated Marketing Manager of the National Parks Authority Eloise Francis.
