ASW Entries Building; True North Smashes Round the Island Record; and Superyacht Challenge Gets Underway!

Dear Readers:

There’s never a dull moment in yachting in Antigua.  A couple of weeks ago I was privileged to meet Pete Townshend of rock band The Who, who very generously donated six Laser Pico dinghies to Antigua’s National Sailing Academy on behalf of himself and The Who.  While discussing his personal charitable goals as well as those of The Who, Pete informed me that there are plans in the works for a charitable concert to be held in Antigua early next year featuring Pete and likely his co-band member, Roger Daltrey.  How exciting that prospect is for all of us in Antigua!

Last week the Volvo 70 True North arrived in Antigua on its Caribbean tour to promote Dubai’s bid to host World Expo 2020.  Again I was privileged to be invited to join skipper Alistair, his wife Sarah-Jane and the entire True North crew along with a number of other Antiguan sailors for Antigua Yacht Club’s Round the Island Race last Saturday.  True North and crew were on a mission to break the Race’s elapsed time record.  Not only was the record broken, it was smashed – by more than 30 minutes!
The new record of 4 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds may well stand for a long time to come.

The Antigua Superyacht Challenge 2013 begins today with the first start at noon outside Falmouth Harbour.  This annual event provides spectacular spectating opportunities and I highly recommend you find a good vantage point somewhere on the south coast of Antigua to catch a glimpse of these spectacular yachts racing today, tomorrow and Sunday.
 Enjoy!
