EXCERPT FROM SOJANA’S BLOG DURING TRANSATLANTIC SUPERYACHT AND MAXI REGATTA Wednesday 12th December 2012
The Farr 115 Sojana recently crossed the Atlantic in the Transatlantic Superyacht and Maxi Regatta and got off to a very challenging start. Sojana ultimately finished the race in a very respectable second place on corrected time, behind Ran Leopard which smashed the existing course record.
Read an excerpt from Sojana's blog shortly after the beginning of the race.
'What a start! We were nearly late, as we could not get off the dock. Our thrusters are pretty useless against 30 knots on the beam! Eventually we warped ourselves off using the pontoon piles.
Then we couldnt get the mizzen up. Then the genoa lock broke. Then we lost two battens out the main, and had to put three reefs in. All by the top of the island!
Last night we set the code zero, and it split leech to luff. Then the tack line broke on the A2. Then the headstrop broke on the A5 and we towed it for an hour before getting it back on board (I slept through that one). While I had my head down, a picture fell off the wall and smashed on my face, showering me in broken glass.
Today is almost boring in comparison. Sailing with genoa, staysail, full main, mizzen staysail, and full mizzen, in 28 -34 knots of wind. Will get the A5 back up as soon as it recovers from its swim.
Everyone a bit tired but loving the sailing.
Looks like a straight drag race for the next few days, so we'll soon know who has pace now that we have stopped messing around and are pointed at the finish. Looks like a fast one.
Best, Marc (and 17 more Sojanies)'
