UPDATE

Eli Fuller of the Antigua Conservation Society Inc. had this update on October 3, 2012:

'We are optimistic about news this week that the our fight to have the Regulations of the Fisheries Act signed by the minister may have been successful.

'According to the Chief Fisheries Officer, the regulations have been sent to Legal Affairs to be vetted. After this it will be signed by the Minister of Fisheries and then printed in The Gazette for several weeks. After that we have had our first victory!

Press Release

St. John’s Antigua, September 28, 2012.

Minister of Agriculture Honourable Hilson Baptise, senior officials from the Fisheries Division, and members of the Antigua and Barbuda Fisherman Cooperative Society and the Fishermen Alliance met Friday, at the Ministry of Agriculture's headquarters, to discuss the revised fisheries regulations.

All the stakeholders agreed that the revised regulation is now ready to become law.

“I want to sign now,” said Minister Baptiste.

During the meeting, the minister reminded those gathered that it would take a collaborative effort to enforce the regulations once they become law.

The draft policy will now be sent to the Office of the Attorney General.
