HOW TO JOIN THE YACHTING INDUSTRY
Friday 18th February 2022

Are you new to yachting or considering a career in yachting? Of so take a look at this great article and link from Molin Lars of Facebook group Antigua Yacht Crew who has great advice for anyone who is interested in getting into the industry. The jobs are varied, and there are more questions posed than answered, but this is a great starting point and some very sensible advice.

NEW TO YACHTING - when and where do you go to find a job on a yacht?

Without any connections in the industry, that is a question most of use were faced with at some point in time. Upon getting started in yachting the vast majority were or will be faced with a very steep learning curve and to some extent also a good portion of uncertainty. The questions are so many;

  • Which courses do I need to do?
  • How much will all this cost?
  • How much money do I need to bring?
  • Where will I be staying while job hunting?
  • What should I pack?
  • How do I find a job?
  • How much will I earn?
  • What is life like on board?
  • When and where should I go to look for work?

The list of questions is nearly endless, but seemingly everyone manage to find an answer to them all - one way or the other.

In the article below, YPI Crew takes a look at the yachting seasons and when and where it is best for newcomers to the industry to land their first job. Read it - if you are just starting out...

Perhaps it should be added that finding your first crew job online with zero experience is not an easy task. In fact, it takes a huge portion of luck unless you have some of these special skills;

  • beauty- / hair care
  • professional massage therapy
  • yoga teaching
  • high end service experience
  • mechanical-, carpentry- or painting skills
  • close protection experience
  • fitness training

Your chances of finding work will increase significantly by locating yourself in one of the suggested yachting hubs during the times mentioned in the article.

If you have any unanswered questions, you are always welcome to ask in this group (feel free to ask in the thread below as well). Most yachties are happy to help and share their experience with those of you just getting started. We were all there once...

Good luck with the upcoming job hunt!
