Shaun in Falmouth, UK |
Twenty-three year old Antiguan engineer Shaun Carter began his engineering career in the mega yacht industry on board the 180-foot schooner Adela, one of the most beautiful classic yachts of all time and a regular visitor to Antigua.
Born and schooled in Antigua, Shaun was a keen windsurfer in his teen years, spending much of his spare time at Lord Nelson’s Beach with Windsurfing Antigua.
He represented Antigua in the HiHo windsurfing regatta in the British Virgin Islands two years in a row when he was 17 and 18. At the same time, Shaun had a developing interest in engineering. He embarked on an apprenticeship with Charles Western of Merdoc Marine and Tom Hellier of Antigua Marine Services while he studied engineering at Antigua’s Evening Institute and taught sailing in his spare time. He eventually moved on to a job with Outdoor World/Yamaha before heading to the United Kingdom Sailing Academy on the Isle of Wight for a course in marine engineering. Soon after successfully completing that course, Shaun returned home to Antigua to seek employment in the yachting industry.

Upon his return to Antigua, Shaun went to see Rena Knight, then Queen of crew placement in Antigua’s yachting industry, who introduced him to the Captain of Adela.
The two hit it off and in February of 2009 at the young age of 21, Shaun was offered his first-ever yacht crew position as sole engineer on the beautiful schooner.
Shaun has grown into his job over the past year and a half, a position that entails much more than simply engineering.
On board Adela, Shaun has crossed the Atlantic Ocean three times, spending his summers in the Mediterranean and his winters largely in Antigua.
Adela is a regular participant in classic yacht regattas and the St Barth Bucket held in March each year. This winter, however, Shaun will have his work cut out for him during a major refit of the beautiful schooner at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK.
Harriet Robinson of Yachting World magazine recently caught up with Shaun on board Adela during preparations for The Pendennis Cup held last month in the waters of Falmouth, UK. Adela had an exciting and successful regatta, placing first in the Class 1 Fleet after completing a total of four races.
Congratulations Shaun on your successful entry into the mega yacht industry on board Adela. It is wonderful to see yet another young Antigua excel in the yachting industry!
