FIRST-EVER PEDALO ATLANTIC CROSSING ENDS IN ANTIGUA Tuesday 20th February 2018
A team of four men became the first ever to pedal across any ocean, starting in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, and ending at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina on Friday 16th February 2018. The team, Pedal the Pond, modified a rowing boat, like those you’d see in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, with boat makers Rannoch Adventure, installing a unique pedal system for propulsion in replacement of rowing.
From Rannoch Adventure:
Max, Paddy, Hec & Henry have become the first 4 man team to ever pedalo across the Atlantic!
Here’s a quote from our Project Manager Angus: “Almost 2 years ago Max and the team met up with us at the London Boat Show with the unique idea of pedalloing the Atlantic and wondering if we could build their boat. It had never crossed our minds before but naturally, we said yes.
We set our naval architect, Phil Morrison, to the job and after 6 months of design and building work, a custom made pedal system was installed into a brand new R45. Pedal The Pond then joined our Rannoch GB Row for 2 weeks, training with myself and Charlie on the systems that would be installed into their boat. They then trained on their pedalo on the Essex and Suffolk coastline.
On Boxing Day the team met up us in Gran Canaria for a week of training and scrutineering before they took on the Atlantic. The team have had their challenges, both mentally, physically and with the pedal system. This has never stopped them and every step of the way they have been so positive and calm.
Now they are in Antigua, crowned the first 4 man team to pedal any ocean. It has been a privilege to be part of their journey.”
Pedal The Pond pedaled The Reveller, an R45 boat with a unique pedalo system installed. The Pedal the Pond team are raising funds for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust.
