BARATH AWAITS HIS CHANCE; THINKING LONG-TERM
Wednesday 16th November 2011

Kolkata, India — Adrian Barath is thinking long-term as he looks to get back on track after recovering from an injury sustained last month in Bangladesh. In his short international career the young right-hander has suffered a few setbacks but revealed he is feeling fit and strong again ahead of the second Test against India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

“I feel match-fit and I’m eager to play against India. I have worked hard to make a recovery and I want to thank the support staff for the work they have done with me to reach this point. I have been doing a lot of (fitness and recovery) work and I have also been spending a lot of time in the nets. If I am selected for the upcoming matches I plan to put my head down and look to get big scores for the team,” the small opener said.

The West Indies arrived in Kolkata from Delhi on Friday and will look to rebound from the defeat in the series opener. They will have a full training session on Saturday morning and again on Sunday afternoon. The second Test bowls off on Monday at 9.30 am (12 midnight Eastern Caribbean Time/11 pm Sunday Jamaica Time).

“I spent the first Test on the sidelines and I was happy to support the boys as they pushed for a win. It didn’t work out but we played some good cricket in Delhi and we are confident as we prepare for the next game. I watched closely from the sidelines and I had a good look at the Indian bowlers. I have also been spending a lot of time looking at footage to see what’s happening with the ball and what the bowlers are doing,” said Barath, who is known as a student of the game.

Barath last played during the One-Day Series in Bangladesh which the Windies won 2-1. He was ruled out of the Test matches in Chittagong and Dhaka and spent the time doing rehabilitation work. He made a full recovery but missed out on selection in the starting XI for the Delhi match. His last Test match was against India in Dominica in July.

Two years ago Barath announced himself on the world stage with a blazing 104 off 138 balls with 19 fours against Australia in the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. It was just his second Test innings and the knock made him the youngest West Indian to make a Test century at 19. He also has a century in ODIs - 113 against Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo in January. Barath revealed that he wants play a part in the future rebuilding of West Indies cricket.

“I have had the honour of being with Desmond Haynes [Batting Consultant] and Richie Richardson [Team Manager] and you could see the respect people have for them as legends of cricket. I believe in this team we have the players who can do well for West Indies and help to take the team forward. As a cricketer and a person, I always like to think long-term and I want to be part of the West Indies team for a long time as we strive to move up the world rankings.”

The 21-year-old Barath is a good friend of leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who has been a stand-out performer, with 35 wickets in his first eight Test matches. Bishoo made his international debut during the ICC Cricket World Cup earlier this year and was named the ICC Emerging Player of the Year at the annual awards ceremony in September.

“Bishoo is a good friend of mine and we talk alot about cricket. I am extremely happy for him and it is great to see the success he has been getting since he started playing for West Indies. I know it is very difficult for spinners in international cricket as batsmen target them, but ‘Bish’ has been outstanding. He works very hard to improve,” Barath said.
