LIST OF 2015 HURRICANE SHELTERS
Monday 8th June 2015

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has released the list of shelters for the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30.

The 40 shelters, which consist mainly of churches and schools, are spread throughout the 17 districts in the twin-island state.

Officers from the Public Works Department assessed the facilities for their structural integrity and level of security before they are approved for use.

NODS advises that moving to a shelter should be the last resort but if it has to be done this should take place during the warning period for any pending storm or hurricane.

Individuals should take food, water, clothing, bedding, medicine, personal needs and other important supplies as these are not provided at the shelters. Pets, alcohol, illegal drugs and weapons are not allowed and there is also a Code of Conduct that shelter managers will enforce.

Each of the 17 districts is assigned a Disaster
Coordinator, who works as a volunteer and as the head of a committee, to ensure that disaster management issues are examined and given some attention, including the opening and management of shelters.

Meanwhile, despite the forecast for a below average hurricane season, NODS is urging residents to finalise hurricane preparedness. Individuals are encouraged to stock up on emergency supplies like flashlights, batteries etc, non-perishable foods and take the necessary steps to secure their homes in case of a storm or hurricane. This would include getting shutters in place and trimming trees.

The predictions for the season are 6-11 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes and up to two major hurricanes.
