COMMON ALERT PROTOCOL (CAP) WORKSHOP HELD
Tuesday 16th December 2014

Agencies involved in disaster management in Antigua and Barbuda are looking at the possibility of expanding national alerting and communicating capabilities.

Representatives from a number of government departments were taken through a two-day training session, which ended on Thursday, focusing on the implementation of the Common Alert Protocol (CAP), which is recognised as the key standard for all-hazards and all-media public alerting.

The workshop held at the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) was facilitated by Consultant with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Eliot Christian and Jenni Rauhala of the Finnish Meteorological Service.

According to Christian, the use of CAP is known to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of alerting systems and ensure that alerts will be easily integrated across emergency systems and public media.

Director of the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Office Keithley Meade was among participants in the workshop which targeted the Police and Defence Forces, the Met Office, the Environment Division, the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross and the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS).

The next step for the country’s alerting authorities is to establish a test system for refining this approach as it will be used by the specific agencies.
