2014 LIST OF HURRICANE SHELTERS IN ANTIGUA & BARBUDA Friday 1st August 2014
31st July 2014 - The list of the 2014 hurricane shelters has been released.
The 37 shelters consist mainly of churches and schools. Antigua and Barbuda is divided into 17 districts, all of which have been assigned shelters and District Disaster Coordinators who work as volunteers.
The Public Works Department assesses designated shelters for their structural integrity and level of security before they are approved for use.
Residents are advised that moving to a shelter during a storm should be the last resort but if it has to be done this should take place during the warning period for any pending storm or hurricane.
Individuals should take water, food, medicine, personal needs, clothing, bedding and other important supplies. Pets, alcohol, illegal drugs and weapons are not allowed in shelters. There is also a code of conduct that shelter managers will enforce.
