EARTHQUAKE MEASURED AT 5.3
Tuesday 30th April 2013

There have been no reports so far of damage or injuries from this morning’s (Tues.) 5.3 magnitude earthquake which shook the island around 2:56.

According to information from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre in Trinidad, the quake occurred west of Barbuda and was located at 17.66°N and 62.10°W with a depth of 58km.

The UWI Seismic Research Centre reports that the earthquake was felt in Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Maarten and St. Barts.

The centre says these results are preliminary and may vary slightly when additional data is processed.

Meanwhile, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) continues to encourage residents to be more aware of earthquakes and their effects since Antigua & Barbuda lies within one of the most seismically active regions in the Caribbean.

The Disaster Office has an ongoing awareness programme throughout the island during which presentations are made to schools, businesses and church groups among others.
