REGIONAL DISASTER CONFERENCE
Monday 2nd December 2019

Emergency Medical Technician, Marina Walker

A youth representative from Barbuda is among delegates from around the region attending the 11th Caribbean conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) in Sint Martin.

Emergency Medical Technician Marina Walker is joining other young people from member states of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA at the December 2 – 6 conference.

It is being held under the theme “The Road to Resilience Checkpoint 2019 - Safeguarding Our Communities, Livelihoods and Economies”.

The bi-annual CDM conference, which brings together disaster heads, government officials and young people from around the region, along with representatives from international organisations, is the region’s leading disaster risk management forum.

The youth representative Marina Walker will be part of a Youth in CDM programme that allows the young people from the CDEMA member states to interact with delegates and expand their knowledge on the various aspects of disaster management, climate change and the environment.

Marina experienced Hurricane Irma in Barbuda in 2017. During the response effort, she was at the forefront assisting with the evacuation of residents and was also one of the medical personnel providing care to persons who returned early to the sister-isle.

According to CDEMA, the Comprehensive Disaster Management conference has showcased best practices emerging from its 18 Participating States and has emerged as a platform for the engagement of political leaders, physical planners, meteorologists, climate change stakeholders, researchers, educators, and public and private financial experts.
