EMERGENCY SHELTERS FOR THE 2019 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON
Monday 26th August 2019

26th August 2019 - Fifty-seven structures have been selected as emergency shelters in Antigua and Barbuda for the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season.

The Ministry of Works has completed the assessment of the buildings, which consist mainly of churches and schools.

The list of shelters also includes the names of the District Disaster Coordinators (DDCs) and their deputies and their contact details.

According to information from the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), each disaster district, which has the same boundaries as the electoral constituencies, has at least two shelters. This means that every community is not earmarked a shelter.

The emergency shelter list has been shared with the various media houses and has also been posted on the NODS facebook page.

Emergency shelters are managed by representatives from the District Disaster Committee and individuals utilizing these facilities will be required to adhere to a number of guidelines which will be enforced by the shelter management team.

NODS advises that persons going to a shelter should take food, water, personal hygiene items, bedding materials for sleeping purposes, medication, special infant needs, clothing and any other items that may be necessary. Animals, alcohol, illegal drugs and weapons are not allowed.
