NODS WANTS YOU TO KNOW: HURRICANE SHELTER ESSENTIALS.
Tuesday 31st August 2010

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) cannot emphasize enough the necessity of adequately being prepared when utilizing a shelter.

The office has received reports from a number of District Disaster Coordinators, that persons who made use of shelters during the passage of Hurricane Earl were poorly prepared, and in many instances did not pack essential items.

At one shelter in particular persons were under the impression that a canteen would be available.

NODS is concerned about the poor preparedness plans and suggests the following steps ahead of utilizing a shelter.

Firstly make sure you pack enough water and food for up to three days. It is also advisable to take a first aid kit to the shelter along with prescription medications for seventy two hours to a week.
If you have a baby, remember to pack enough diapers, formula and bottles to last at least three days. Take playing cards, games and toys to keep children, and yourself, occupied. Take a set of clean clothes and bedding (pillow, sheets).

Carry a can opener; special items for elderly or disabled family members; battery powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries; cash/credit cards; passport and other important papers.
Keep in mind alcoholic beverages and weapons are not allowed in shelters. Smoking is also not allowed. There is no need to bring cooking equipment or furniture to a shelter.
Shelters do not accept pets, so you should make arrangements beforehand to have your untied pets secured in a room, with sufficient water, and food for at least three days.
A shelter manager will be on hand at the shelter to assist those who utilize the facilities.
