LATEST PRESS RELEASE FROM NODS ON HURRICANE IRMA Tuesday 5th September 2017
Tuesday 5th September 2017 - In consultation with the Antigua and Barbuda Met Office, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has been informed that Hurricane Irma is now a category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds measuring approximately 175 MPH.
Hurricane force winds extend outwards up to 45 miles from the center with tropical force winds extending outwards of 140 miles.
On its present path, both Antigua and Barbuda will be heavily impacted by this very powerful hurricane.
Storm surges in the category 5 hurricane can reach 20 to 30 ft. in height so therefore persons living in coastal areas are asked to take extra precautions. It must be noted that storm surges have been responsible for many deaths.
Residents are asked to bring the final preparation to a speedy conclusion in readiness for the impact of hurricane Irma later today.
If you are uncertain about the safety of your homes, the time to evacuate is now. Please move to a shelter, this could be family or friends or any of the shelters which will be open to the public in your area.
