30th June 2017 - The People’s Republic of China donates 1.2 million US dollars disaster management supplies
The People’s Republic of China has donated approximately US$1.2 million dollars’ worth of disaster management equipment and supplies to the government of Antigua and Barbuda.
The supplies included items like folding cots, rescue protective clothing, boots, gloves, helmets, basket stretchers, safety harnesses, ropes, and other tools and equipment.
Minister of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development the Hon. Samantha Marshall, under whose portfolio disaster management falls, accepted the donation from Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China His Excellency Wan Xianmin (pronounced Shian Ming) on behalf of the government. According to Minister Marshall, the government appreciates the invaluable support from China.
Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne and the country’s Non-Resident Ambassador to China His Excellency Brian Stuart-Young had high praises for the Chinese government for its willingness to always help Antigua and Barbuda.
Director of the NODS Philmore Mullin says the donation will put the national disaster management mechanism in a very good position where we will be able to boost the capabilities of responding agencies. Mullin says NODS will ensure that the various agencies take good care of the equipment and supplies.
Discussions leading up to Friday’s presentation began about two years ago.
