RESULTS OF THE 2013 TOP RANKING NATIONAL CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association hosted their flagship event on Sunday 30th June, the Top Ranking National Cycling Road Championships. Despite the rainy conditions, over 47 riders turned out in quest of the sports' most prestigious title, the National Champion. But the main players came out to display their talent as the battle for the supremacy.

Reigning National Champion suffered an early wheel problem after the first lap of 6 where he had to chase for a lap to be back in the race. But Andre Simon, Marvin Spencer, Garfield Henry and Robert Marsh continued to dictate the race by breaking away to lead the race and chasing each other avoiding anyone to get away to ride home by themselves.

The last lap came down to 4 veterans and a sophomore, Marsh, Ken Jackson, Marvin Spencer, Bobby Simon and Andre Simon. Andre Simon rode away to lead the race by himself, leaving the 4 veterans to chase, Marsh powered himself around course catching Simon within the last 3 miles to the finish, several tactical movements took place to separate each other but none were successful, bringing the two down to a sprint and resulting with Andre Simon giving his club, Team Terminix the victory.

Simon won the national title in a time of 2:55.31.085, setting a new course record time, erasing the time of 2:57 set since 2005 by Phillip Clarke of Barbados. Robert Marsh was 2nd after edged by Simon clocking a similar time of 2:55.31.465. Ken Jackson also closely out sprinted Bobby Simon for the last sport on the podium placing 3rd in a time of 2:56.18.468 ahead of long-time rival Bobby Simon who was 4th in a time of 2:55.18.949. Marvin Spencer placed 5th in a time of 2:57.14 while Jyme Bridges placed 6th after a rough day in the saddle.

Tesheed Gordon of East Side Raiders Cycling Club is the National Road and Time Trial Junior Champion. The 17 year old is having a tremendous season dusk far contesting the B-Class and winning most his races. Tesheed won the 44 mile junior race in a time of 1:57.02 ahead of Rattlers, Colin James who completed his laps in a time of 2:01.03. Joel Phillip of Team Terminix anchors the 3rd position in a time of 2:06.34.

National Sportswoman, Tamiko Butler returned home for the Nationals and retained her title as the National Cycling Female Champion. Tamiko completed the women’s course in a time of 1:27.17. Kevinia Francis of Road Runners Club placed 2nd in a time of 1:54.49. New comer, Iola Moses was 3rd in a time 2:12.04.

B-Class ran the 66 mile course resulting with Tesheed Gordon as the winner; Gordon completed the course in time of 3:04.49 ahead of last race winner, Conroy Thomas. Thomas clocked a time of 3:10.34 beating Mervin Gore who was 3rd in a time of 3:14.48. Ashfield Vigo and NKosie Barnes were 4th and 5th respectively. Nigel Fabian won the Cadet Class ahead of Dexter Simmons Jr and David Simmons.

Meanwhile, several cyclists will leave the island to compete around the region. Jyme Bridges and Andre Simon was invited to participate in the Tour of Martinique. Bridges and Simon will be part of a composite English Caribbean team consist of 2 Antiguans, 2 from Barbados and a St. Lucian. They will be competing the Martinique’s biggest race, 10 stages of Tour de Martinique which will run from 6th – 14th July.

Team Terminix and others will be competing in the annual John T Memorial race in Anguilla. Team Terminix will be led by Conroy Thomas along with the other team members, Bobby Simon, Tristan Matthew, Jaleel Cannonier, Joel Phillip and Nigel Fabian and manage by Ira Fabian. Other club riders will also be in attendance: Neil Lloyd, Garfield Henry and Tesheed Gordon, as Gordon prepares from 2013 Caribbean Cycling Junior Championships to be held in Aruba, July 27 – 28th. Antigua and Barbuda Sport Timing System and Roland Morgan will be officiating and timing the race for the 3rd consecutive year.
