LOCAL CYCLISTS PREPARING FOR CARIBBEAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Local cyclists, Robert Marsh, Jyme Bridges and Marvin Spencer secured themselves as the starters of the October 20th Male Individual Time Trial in the Antigua hosting of the 12th edition of Caribbean Cycling Championships.
 
On September 8th the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association staged a 24 mile Individual Time Trial as a test race on the exact course for the INET Caribbean Cycling Championships.
Robert Mars, who is preparing exceptionally well as he has his eyes welled upon the podium for this event, starts to see the results of his training as he effortlessly produced the best time on the course. Marsh of ESR Cycling Club produced a time that improves the standards of the Association, which is one hour, to win the event.

The 43 year old completed the 24 mile course in a time of 56 minutes to beat his closest rival, Jyme Bridges by over a minute.  Bridges also made the standards by producing a time of 57:12 as the 2nd fastest time of the day. Former National Time Trial Champion also secured his spot with sub hour time of 58:14 to place 3rd and added his name on the start list for the big show. Ken Jackson was just outside the qualifying time placing 4th in a time of 1:01.04 ahead of National Triathlete, Andre Simon who was 5th in a time of 1:02.23. The runner up still have one more chance to make the 4th spot that is allotted to Antigua and Barbuda as the host country on October 7th when the Cycling Association host the final race on the calendar, Scrubbo Pineapple Individual Time Trial.

B-Class also had a go at the 24 mile distance. Ashley Rhodes of ESR Cycling Club came of the victor, the rookie produced a time of 1:04.17 to win followed by Tesheed Gordon of the Rattlers Club who placed 2nd in a time of 1:05.43. An improving Mervin Gore settled in the 3rd position ahead of Ashfield Vigo and Andre Bovell who was 4th and 5th respectively.
 
Tamiko Butler tested the course that he will be defending her Caribbean title on, where the females will go for a lap less of the male’s course as the females with battle over a 12 mile distance. The reigning Caribbean Time Trial Champion made her run in a time of 31:47 to win the female class. The 21 year old is confident that she will retain her title in front of her home crowd and is happy with her progress so far. Lindsay Duffy and Kevinia Francis continued their battle despite Tamiko came and stealing their show. Lindsay came 2nd in a time of 37:52 ahead of Kevina Francis who was 3rd in a time of 40:28.
 
In the meantime, the Antigua Cycling Association will be staging a 63 Mile Test Course Race on Sunday 23rd September starting at 9:30am. The event will be the final road race for the 2012 season and the final race with points for 2012 Points series which is presently lead by Robert Marsh (360), followed by Jyme Bridges (338) and Marvin Spencer (328). The race will start at the chosen home for the CCC event, the eastern roads surround the Sir Viv Stadium head unto Factory road, up to Mount Joy, Pares, into Collins, Bethesda, Red Hill, Cobbs Cross, Falmouth, Liberta, All Saints, Jonas Road, back unto Factory road, North Sound and back unto the road surround Sir Viv Stadium for 3 laps. The race will use as the final selection to pick the 10 men team to compete against the rest of the Caribbean on October 21st in the Caribbean Men’s Road Race. The final selection will base on standards set by the association; these standards will set off of times from the previous race that ran on the exact course. So far, 12 names have been selected of which 10 will be chosen and all will be vying for the top 10 and points in Sundays very important race. Sunday’s race will stage the usual and following category and laps; A-Class 3 laps, B-Class 3 laps, Female and Juniors 2 laps and Cadets 1 lap.
 
The Association is asking for volunteers to assist with Sunday’s race with the intention of volunteering for the CC Championships and are encouraging the general public to come out to cheer on the riders to encourage them for better performance as they get ready for one of the biggest race in their lifetime. The 12 men selection consist and captain by Jyme Bridges, Robert Marsh, Marvin Spencer, Omari King, Andre Simon, Brian Lyn, Dale Richardson, Ashley Rhodes, Ken Jackson, Neil Lloyd, Walton Francis and Clint Henry. The others in Sunday’s race will be Patrick Peters, Alvin Merrick, Garfield Henry. The B-Class will also feature Mervin Gore, Ashfield Vigo, Nkosie Barnes, Gilrick Pryce. The Juniors will also be on display namely, Tesheed Gordon, Tristan Matthew, Jaleel Canonnier and other.
 
The Caribbean Time Trial star, Tamiko Butler will also on display to run the female’s 2 lap course against National selectee, Kevinia Francis and National triathlete, Lindsay Duffy.

The Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association has the option of registering a 7 or 10 men team depending on Sunday’s qualification along with a 2 or 3 members female national team
