INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC DAY: JUNE 23
Tuesday 19th June 2012

On 23rd June, 2012 the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Committee will, like the rest of the world, celebrate Olympic Day.

This year’s activities will however be held on Sunday 24th June starting in front the Olympic Office on Redcliffe Street, under  the theme,  “Move, Learn and Discover and will feature the traditional Fun Run/Ride/Walk around St. John’s and a new innovation- a 10K relay run and ride, also around the city. Simultaneously, we will also be hosting a 5k run on our sister island Barbuda.

Olympic Day 2012 provides an opportunity for physical activity for persons of all ages while facilitating Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in a global celebration of Olympic Ideals- sports and values.

First celebrated in 1948, this year’s Olympic Day celebrations take place exactly 35 days before the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London, England. The Games are already creating much excitement across the globe and Olympic Day 2012 will serve to further excite, motivate and trigger the interest of our sport loving nation, especially the youth.

The Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Committee invites and anticipates mass participation from our schools, clubs, national associations, work places, health and fitness enthusiasts, church groups, the elderly, pregnant mothers to name a few. Olympic Day 2012 promises to be a truly national event with prizes for such categories as youngest participant, oldest participant, largest family, and best turned out work place, etc.

Sports and physical activity as a social movement continue to offer opportunities for healthier, more balanced and better life and Olympic Day is an ideal moment for us, as a people, to join this global movement.

Let us Move towards a healthier nation; Learn about Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect and discover and/or rediscover the value and benefits of sport.

The National Olympic Committee takes this opportunity to commend and congratulate our athletes who have qualified to represent us in the London Olympics. Daniel Bailey, Brendan Christian and Karin Clashing Oriley who was invited to participate under the Olympic Swimming rules and all our other elite athletes who are still pursuing qualifying standards.
Congratulations too, to Jamol Pilgrim who will be Antigua and Barbuda’s first representative to compete in the Paralympic Games.

On behalf of the Executive Board and staff of the NOC, we take this opportunity to extend congratulations to Ms. Kristy Dickenson who has been appointed as a Doping Control Officer for the Games. This appointment makes her the first Antiguan to be appointed to work in the Olympics and Paralympic Games.
