ANTIGUA COMPETING IN 2011 PAN AMERICAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Thursday 5th May 2011

Three of the islands elite and most dominant riders left the island to participate in 2011 Pan American Cycling Championships being held in Medellin, Columbia, May 3 – 8th 2011.

OECS Champion and island’s number one ranked rider, Jyme Bridges, Robert Marsh and National female Cycling Champion, Tamiko Butler will participate in the Sub-region premier event, Pan American Cycling Championships. The three will compete in the Road – Individual Time Trial and Mass start Road Race. The three riders will participate in the Individual Time Trial on May 6th. Bridges and Marsh will race against the clock over a distance of 21 miles whilst Butler will be amongst the first group on 6th May to race over a 10 mile distance.

The 3 will be at it again on 8th May in the Pan American mass start road race. Olympic Scholarship holder, Jyme Bridges and Robert Marsh will race over a distance of 113 miles. Tamiko Butler will race the female distance of 60.9 miles which will be Tamiko’s first race at this level.

Bridges and Butler will try qualifying at this final qualifier for the 2011 Pan American Games to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in October this year. Robert Marsh who is already qualified, will take this opportunity to compete amongst the same field he will meet again in October. Marsh's qualification came last year at the 2010 Caribbean Cycling Championships held in Guadeloupe. Robert Marsh decided to compete at the 2011 Pan American Games to be held in Mexico in October since he and the National Olympic Committee came to an amicable resolution over the long standing issue between he and NOC. The event is also the start of qualifying series for the 2012 Olympics Games.

The 2011 Pan American Cycling Championships will also host the Pan American Confederation General Assembly of which President of Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association, Cliff Williams will attend.

The trip to this most important event is all made possible through the assistance of the Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Committee.
