CSA - JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER
Thursday 9th June 2016

Dear CSA Members and Friends:

We certainly had a great winter/spring sailing season in the Caribbean with successes across the region in everything from youth regattas to mainstream Caribbean keelboat regattas, to Superyacht Cups and offshore races.  And we have an equally busy summer/autumn season ahead of us with many exciting events on the calendar.

St. Thomas Yacht Club will host the 24th annual International Optimist Regatta 2016 presented by EMS Virgin Islands next week from June 12 to 19 featuring the Tote Marine on-the-water training clinic from Monday through Wednesday, followed by team racing on Thursday, and the Optimist Regatta Friday through Sunday.  This is a hugely popular and well-attended youth regatta.

July will see the Seaboard Marine North American Optimist Championships (Optinam) taking place in Antigua from July 10 through 18 for the second year running.  Over 165 Optimist sailors from around the world 15 years and under are expected to compete in Antigua with more than 50 team coaches plus parents, chaperones, friends and interested spectators all joining them.

In August Antigua’s National Sailing Academy will host a two-week RYA instructors’ training course sponsored by Phaedo3 and the Cappa Cup Regatta to train 12 new dinghy instructors all of whom are Caribbean youngsters looking for careers in the sailing/yachting world.

As we all know, the summer Olympics will take place in Rio, Brazil from August 5 through 21 and several Caribbean sailors will be representing their countries.  I am currently aware of a number of regional sailors who have qualified from USVI, Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda and Aruba.  We would love to do a feature on all Caribbean sailors who have qualified for the 2016 summer Olympics and follow their progress over the next couple of months.  To that end, I would be grateful if all members would send us as much information as possible about their Olympic sailors so we can add a feature to the website and keep everyone apprised of their progress on social media.

This year’s Caribbean Dinghy Championships will be hosted by St. Maarten Yacht Club from October 7-9.  The NOR has been issued and entries are now open so all interested clubs are requested to advise SMYC of their interest as soon as possible as the event is limited to only six teams due to available equipment.  You will find more information about the CDC in this newsletter.

Last but not least, the CSA Annual Conference will be held in Antigua from October 21 to 23 and all members are encouraged to send at least one representative.  Plans are still being developed but it promises to be a very informative and worthwhile conference once again.  Keep reading for more information elsewhere in this newsletter.

Happy sailing!

Kathy Lammers, CSA President

The Caribbean Dinghy Championships will be hosted this year by St. Maarten Yacht Club and will take place from October 7th to 9th.  Classes include Optimist, Laser Radial, Laser Standard and RS Vision (two-man asymmetric).  Racing will take place in Simpson Bay or in Simpson Bay Lagoon, depending on conditions.  Social events will include a pig roast on the shore of Simpson Bay on the Saturday night.  The event can accommodate only six teams so islands are encouraged to express their interest well in advance to ensure a spot for their team.  LIAT, The Caribbean Airline is a proud sponsor of the Caribbean Sailing Association and a limited number of flight subsidies are available for CDC competitors.  More information is available in the Notice of Race which can be found here or by contacting Neil Maher at smyccoach@gmail.com.

The CSA thanks all interested member organisations for taking the time to consider both participating in and bidding to host the CDC and for their continued support of the Caribbean Sailing Association.
