FIVE CARIBBEAN SAILORS PARTICIPATE IN OLYMPICS
Sunday 29th July 2012

Five young Caribbean sailors are competing in this year's Olympics in England.

For the Netherland Antilles this will be the last time that they can enter the Olympics, and sail under the AHO country code so it is with great delight we will watch young Philippine van Aanholt. Philippine van Aanholt from Curacao will be sailing in the Laser Radial.

Philippine will be following her father Cor van Aanholt who sailed in the 2000 Olympics in Australia in the Laser.

The Netherland Antilles won a silver medal in the 1988 Olympics in Korea with Jan Boersma saling a Lechner Board (windsurfer). This was also the first time that the Netherland Antilles competed in the sailing category.

Cy Thompson from St.Thomas will be sailing in the Laser. Cy will be following his grandfather, Rudy Thompson who competed in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico sailing the Flying Dutchman along with John Hamber. This was the first time that the USVI competed in any sport at the Olympics. Also sailing that year for the USVI, was Per A. Dohm sailing a Finn.

Mimi Roller from USVI (St.John) will be competing in the Laser Radial. Check out an interview with Mimi on sailgroove.

As most of you will know in the 1988 Olympics in Korea Peter Holmberg (USVI) won a silver medal sailing in a Finn.

Andrew Lewis from Trinidad will be sailing in a Laser. My records show that Trinidad and Tobago was one of the first (CSA) Caribbean islands to compete in sailing in the Olympics in Italy in 1960 with Richard J. Bennet and Gerald Bird sailing in a Flying Dutchman.

The Bahamas first competed in Sailing in the 1952 Olympics., which I believe was the first Caribbean island to complete.

Beth Lygoe from St.Lucia will be sailing in a Laser Radial. St.Lucia first competed in 1996 Olympics (in the USA ) with Michael Green sailing a Laser.
