COMMUNITIES ARE TO BE COMMENDED AND ENCOURAGED TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF SPORTS AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
Monday 21st June 2010

Sports, Local Government and Special Projects in the Ministry of Education, Sports, Youth and Gender Affairs has planned a series of community based events designed to encourage stakeholder ownership in our public sports and recreational facilities across the islands of Antigua and Barbuda and to recognize the efforts of those individuals and organizations who have taken the initiative so to do over the years. Additionally, the opportunity will be used to recognize any recent outstanding performance of clubs and or athletes in the community where the public sports facility exists or any recent national achievements in sports.

The first of these events, which will be held on Sunday June 27, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. at the ‘Noel 'Nyah' Roberts Sports Complex will honour the contribution of community artiste and sculptor, Mr. Keithroy Davis and community service volunteers, Mr. Barrymore Gore and Ms. Dunica Charles. Additionally, the ceremony will also recognize the outstanding performance of Community Sports Clubs, the Under 16 Ottos Rangers Football and the Golden Nut Female Softball Cricket teams for placing first and reaching to the finals respectively. Finally, the winning performances of the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association’s representatives at the recently concluded Digicel OECS Cycling Championships in Grenada, the Antigua and Barbuda Triathlon Team at the 2010 Caribbean Triathlon Union and OECS Triathlon Championships and the Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Team at the 2010 Leeward Islands Youth Track and Field Championships will also be recognized.

It is hoped that as a result of these events which will bring greater awareness ncreased community ownership of our sports and recreational facilities will support the further growth of sports and recreational facilities.

Upcoming Events in this category are planned for sports and recreational facilities to include but not be limited to:

  • Radio Range Sports and Recreational Park
  • JSC Sports Stadium
  • Ottos Community Centre ( Old Ottos School)
  • Liberta Sports Field

Let us know of individuals and entities who have been making a difference in the facilities that you have been using.
