MEET THE A&B OLYMPIANS

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are this Friday and Antigua and Barbuda will be represented by some amazing athletes. Read up on them below and make sure you tune into the games to see how your very own perform.

Afia Charles was born on 22 July, 1992. She is a sprinter from Antigua and Barbuda who specializes in the 400 metres. Charles is 5 feet 7 inches tall. She attends the University of Central Florida (UCF), where she competes for the UCF Knights track and field team. In her freshman year she won the bronze medal in the 400 metres at the 2011 CARIFTA Games held in Montego Bay, Jamaica; competing for Antigua she set a new personal best time of 54.23 seconds. She broke the freshman and school records for the outdoor 400 metres, setting a time of 53.6 seconds and was a member of the 47 × 400 metres relay team that competed at the 2011 NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship.[2] In her sophomore year she set another school record by running 54.17 seconds on her way to winning the gold medal in the 400 meters at the C-USA Indor Championships.

 

Daniel Everton Bailey, a male sprinter from Antigua and Barbuda, was born on 9 September, 1986. He specializes in the 100 metres. He is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 150 lbs. He came to prominence in 2009 with a 100 m win on the IAAF Golden League and a fourth place finish at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. He was the bronze medalist over 60 metres at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships and has also won sprint medals at Caribbean regional level. His personal best of 9.91 seconds is the Antiguan national record over 100 m. Bailey represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2004 Summer Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2008 Summer Olympics. In Beijing he competed at the 100 metres sprint and placed second in his heat. He qualified for the second round in which he improved his time to 10.23 seconds.

 

Brendan Kyle Akeem Christian was born on 11 December, 1983. He is a sprinter from Antigua and Barbuda who specializes in the 200 metres. His personal best 100 metres time is 10.11 seconds, achieved in May 2004 in College Station. At the time he achieved this mark, it was a national record. He is also a holder of the Antiguan and Barbudan record in 4 x 100 metres relay with 39.90 seconds. As a junior he won the silver medal in this event at the 2002 World Junior Championships, where he also finished sixth in the 100 metres race. He then competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarter-final, and the 2006 Commonwealth Games where he reached the semi-final. In 2007 he won the 100 metres bronze medal and the 200 metres gold medal at the Pan American Games. Shortly after, at the 2007 World Championships, he reached the semi-finals in both events. There, he set a national record in the 200 metres of 20.23 seconds. Christian represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He competed at the 200 metres and placed second in his first round heat in a time of 20.58 seconds. He improved his time in the second round to 20.26 seconds.

 

Karin Clashing O’Reilly was born on 21st August, 1992. She is 5 feet 8 inches in height and weighs 170lbs. She started swimming at the tender age of 4 and from there on, joined the Wadadli Aquatic Racers. Some of her swimming achievements include: Represented Antigua at OECS Swimming Champs 2005, 2006, 2008, represented Antigua at Carifta 2005, 2006, represented Antigua at the Worlds Championships, Rome 2009 – 5k open Water, and ABASA open water 1 mile female champion 2005, 2006 to name a few. She hopes to attend more Regional and International meets. Her career goal is to become an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry and in cosmetology.
