WOMEN 20-20 MATCH
Wednesday 17th February 2010

Women's hard ball cricket in Antigua will get a tremendous boost when two All-Star teams take to the field and play a 20-20 hardball Exhibition match on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.

22 women from various soft ball cricket clubs across Antigua have risen to the challenge and spent the last six weeks building on their cricket skills by attending practice session three times a week at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium. This highly anticipated match will bring the curtain down on the first Kenny Benjamin Community Cricket Festival.

The women's enthusiasm and determination have won over their coaches - retired West Indian fast bowlers, Kenny and Winston Benjamin, who have been putting the women through their paces: "The early training sessions focused on the fundamentals of hard ball cricket and now we are focusing on match skills - longer batting, bowling and fielding sessions. We are really impressed by their attitude and willingness to learn," states Kenny Benjamin.

And although Antigua does not have a women's hardball league, the teams are training hard: "Women's cricket has seen tremendous growth in the last decade especially within the larger cricketing nations and we hope that this exhibition match will encourage other women both players and potential coaches to get involved and start their own teams," adds Benjamin.

The women's 20-20 match, which will take place under the floodlights of the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds and  patrons will be charged EC$10 to watch this historic event: "We want families, friends, clubs, fans and cricket lovers to come and out and fill the grassy berms and enjoy an evening of entertaining cricket. They will get a chance to see some of our future stars."

The Kenny Benjamin Community Cricket Festival aims to rejuvenate interest and participation in grass roots cricket through a series of taster workshops in Umpiring; Match Refereeing; Scoring; Event Management and Coaching.
